COURSE DESCRIPTION:
We will be learning about other lands, countries, and cultures by studying the continents and regions of the Western Hemisphere. We will also be studying the history of these regions and learning about ancient civilizations. Throughout the year we will be integrating geography and other subject areas to develop a better understanding of our world and our growing "global interdependence."
MATERIALS NEEDED:
Folder for Social Studies - no prongs
Pencils, erasers, encased small pencil sharpener
Colored pencils for map work as needed
Colored pen for correcting papers-not red or black
Textbook (loaned to you), covered with an extra large book sock.
Agenda book (given to you)
GRADING:
The Hastings Area Schools Social Studies Department has agreed to a graduated weighted scale for grades 6-12 social studies classes. The scale for 6th grade Social Studies is:
Homework=55%
Assessments (tests, quizzes, projects)=30%
Organization (completed classwork/homework, agenda book, textbook, folder, pencil, grading pen, and work ethic)=15%
LATE WORK:
Late work will be accepted for no less than 50% of a completed assignment in the chapter of study. Late work is not accepted after the completion of the unit/chapter.
MAKE UP WORK/EXTRA HELP/REDO WORK:
If students need extra assistance or want the opportunity to improve a failing test grade, arrangements should be made in advance with the teacher. Students have two days for each excused absence to make up missed work. It is the student's responsibility to check the teacher's agenda book for missed assignments and ask for the handouts.
TEACHING METHODS:
United Streaming (audio visual), Smartboard, textbook, small groups, class discussion, lecture, note-taking, projects, and group presentations are the teaching methods used.
DISCIPLINE:
Adequate warnings are given before behavior plans are given out. The principal will go over these procedures and the behavior plan system with you.
MRS. CLARK'S EXPECTATIONS:
In Mrs. Clark's Social Studies class you are expected to...
1. be in the room when the bell rings.
2. bring your text, folder, agenda book, sharpened pencils, and finished homework.
3. copy the day's agenda from the chalkboard into your agenda book, completely.
4. use the restroom and get a drink during your five minute break.
5, communicate respectfully.
6. treat your textbook with great care.
7. turn in your best work.
8. study your study guide for all tests (parents: if you help your child study and sign the study guide, your child receives a point of extra credit on the test).
9. remember that people have a variety of strengths and weaknesses. Please allow them space to grow in areas that are challenging.
